Matching Boo Boos

So mommy and Gigi officially have matching boo boos. When Georgia was 18 months old she had foot surgery to remove an extra bone in her left foot. And last monday I had surgery on my left foot to remove a sesmoid bone that had died. YES died! Here is how it happened, cause I know you have to be wondering how a bone just dies.

As women we know that pregnancy changes us emotionally and physically forever. Who would have thought it could have caused bones in your body to die?! Well thats what happened. When I was prego with Lorelei I carried her only in the belly. I never really gained weight anywhere else. Which is great for weight loss after the pregnancy but not for someone with very high foot arches. Since I already had high arches it means I put too much pressure on the balls of my toes. And then add to that 55 lbs in the belly tips me forward even more. So, I started having bad pain in my 7th month of pregnancy. I just thought it was a normal prego pain that would go away when the baby came. I also thought it was due to wearing heels at work and flip flops and just not being good to my feet. After Lorelei was born I started working out like crazy to get the weight off so that the pain would stop. It never did. Fast forward 6 months and I finally went to a doctor. He did some tests and determined that the sesmoid bone (which is one of two small bones that sits within the tendon under the ball of your big toe and helps you to push off when walking or running) had died. What happened was that the pressure from the weight caused inflamation to the tendon causing the blood supply to the bone to be cut off. hence...dead bone. I was shocked. never heard of such a thing. We tried everything to get it back. CPR! ok just kidding. I wore one of those big ugly boots for a few weeks....nope. medication....nope....very expensive orthodics....nope. So only one thing left. surgery. I was terrified. I cried. I considered just living with the pain. But that was not an option. I cant walk without pain. No running. No nothing. and as we all know with two small kids this wasnt going to work.

So, off to surgery I went. The pain after surgery it wasnt bad. It wasnt what people kept telling me. What WAS bad was seeing the incision yesterday at my 10 day appt. The doctor told me the incision would be MAYBE an inch long. yeah right! more like 3 inches! I cried when the nurse cut the bandage off. It looked so bad. blood. so much dried stuff I couldnt even see stitches! it was sooo bad. but its getting better.

So when all is said and done Gigi and I will have matching scars. To prove its bad below is a picture. HOWEVER LET THIS BE YOUR WARNING. IF YOU DONT DO WELL WITH BLOOD CLICK OFF THIS PAGE AND DONT FINISH READING THIS BLOG.
